SMEs across Britain 'falling victim to crime' Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the City of London and across the rest of the UK have fallen victim to crime over the last year, new research has shown.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), around two-thirds - 64 per cent - of all firms that can be placed in this bracket have had a crime committed against them over the previous 12 months, which has cost them an average of £2,900 each.

Following the global economic downturn, the government has pledged to help the country's small companies to expand and act as a driver for the nation's wider fiscal recovery.

However, the FSB's Localism and Tackling Crimes Against Businesses report has shown that many are being affected by crime, with 39 per cent then not reporting these instances to the police.

Mike Cherry, policy chairman at the organisation said: "A crime against a small firm is not just an attack against that business but it has repercussions on the wider community."
