Tribunal figures 'up due to recession'The number of employment tribunals being brought against organisations in the City of London and throughout the rest of the UK has increased partly because of the global economic downturn.

That is according to Rakesh Patel of Thompsons Solicitors, who said that people in roles such as finance jobs in London have become more likely to start legal proceedings against their employers as multiple actions - whereby several members of staff have their tribunals handled together due to their similarities - are more common.

"Multiple cases for failing to consult people over redundancies [and] multi-claimant cases have increased," he explained.

Mr Patel added that claims for unfair dismissal and breaches of contract have also gone up.

His comments came after the publication of data from the Tribunals Service earlier this month, which showed that accepted claims at these cases have risen by more than 50 per cent in the last 12 months.
