Acas: Firms must update policies to cope with ageing workforceCompanies with employees in roles such as finance jobs in London must review and update their internal policies in order to deal with an ageing workforce.

That is according to Steve Williams, head of equality services at Acas, who has said that it is crucial for employers to act sooner rather than later to come to terms with the upcoming changes that will be caused by the abolition of the default retirement age from October 2011.

"Employers should have a performance management system in place to ensure older workers have objectives and the opportunity to identify training needs," he remarked.

Mr Williams added that companies must also be sensitive to the needs of more experienced workers by implementing provisions to cope with illness and disabilities.

The Acas official's comments came after the publication of data by the Chartered Management Institute and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development which revealed that 14 per cent of bosses in the UK feel their business is well-equipped to deal with an older workforce.
