REC: Government must consider jobs markets before capping immigrationEmployers offering roles such as accountancy jobs in the City of London need to be given more support by the government, an expert has said.

According to Tom Hadley, director of external relations at the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance needs to give more consideration to the specific needs of the UK's employment sector following the recession before imposing any limit on the "highly sensitive and politicised issue" of immigration.

"It is crucial to ensure that any cap is regularly reviewed and that it reflects the needs of the jobs market," he said.

Mr Hadley added that "up-skilling and providing opportunities for UK workers" must also be a priority for the government after the downturn.

His comments came after business secretary Vince Cable admitted last week that such a cap is already costing the country thousands of jobs and could also be harming its recovery.

However, recent official figures showed that employment levels in Britain went up by 0.4 per cent in the second quarter of the year.
