Companies 'must seek to get more women in the board room' More women need to be allowed to take high level accountancy jobs to ensure that firms can offer the best possible service.

That is according to home secretary Theresa May, who told HR magazine that not enough board room level finance jobs in London are being offered to females within FTSE 100 companies.

She explained that the coalition government is committed to promoting fair pay and a right to flexible working and equal opportunities for women in business, but added that companies can benefit too.

The minister said: "By becoming more representative at all levels, companies can become more innovative and more productive and have a better understanding of what all their customers want and need."

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development recently suggested in a report that employers in the City of London and throughout the rest of the UK should ensure that they take proper measures to manage and prevent stress among their workforce.
