Nine to five not yet a thing of the past, expert saysCompanies in the City of London and across the rest of the country will not be making wholesale changes to the working hours of nine to five in the near future, an expert has said.

According to Stephen Overell, associate director of the Work Foundation, the employment environment in the UK is beginning to show signs of a change, with many companies adopting alternative internal policies such as flexible working following the global economic downturn.

This is due to the fact that there has been an increased demand from employees for such allowances following the recession, but while Mr Overell stated that this can benefit both bosses and workers, he does not expect traditional practices to change overnight.

Mr Overell was speaking following the publication of research by Work Wise UK, which stated that the hours seen as normal are now becoming a thing of the past.

"Where the [research] talks about the nine to five becoming a thing of the past, that's probably a step too far," he added.
