Increase in mature-aged jobs could expand UK skills setA hike in the number of mature-aged jobs available to older workers in the UK could help the country satisfy a demand for an increase in the skills it offers.

Speaking at the Conservative Party Conference, minister for further education, skills and lifelong learning John Hayes noted Britain must develop its capabilities in the workplace if it is to compete on the world stage.

The nation's future "lies as a hi-tech, high-skilled economy", the politician said, adding it will never return to the days of boasting a low-skilled workforce.

Many employers may obtain these capabilities more easily in staff of advancing years and could hand out jobs to people aged 40-plus on this basis.

"We might, in a decade or so, find ourselves outpaced in terms of intermediate and higher level skills unless we get our policies right," warned Mr Hayes.

Age UK has recently unveiled research by the Skills Funding Agency that shows people aged over 50 are keen to learn new skills, with the number of apprenticeships taken up since 2007 more than doubling among this group.
