An increasing number of older people are showing it is not only young workers that can learn new skills by signing up for apprenticeships, which could boost their prospects in the 50-plus jobs market.Age UK has obtained figures from the Skills Funding Agency that show a record number of 'silver apprentices' have emerged over the last four years. Since the days shortly before the recession began in early 2007, the amount of people aged over 50 who have signed up to an apprenticeship has ballooned from 2,605 to 5,376. Michelle Mitchell, charity director at Age UK, says: "It's great to see so many 50-plus workers snap up the opportunity to upgrade their skills or make a fresh start with their careers through an apprenticeship." One benefit of this could be a subsequent increase in high-calibre candidates for 50-plus jobs. Older females could put their new skills to good use in the IT sector, with Maggie Berry, managing director of womenintechnology.co.uk, recently suggesting it is in need of more women workers.
