IT professionals offered advice on applying for private sector mature-aged jobsOlder works in the IT industry who may be thinking of switching from their public sector position to a mature-aged job in the private sphere are among those to be offered tips by an expert.

Maggie Berry, managing director at womenintechnology.co.uk, said the differing priorities for firms in each sector make a move between the two potentially trickier than many imagine.

The threat of government cuts in the public sector means many will be looking to move, she added.

"It's not actually the retraining or re-skilling, it's sometimes just the perception of the skills that you're bringing and how different it is working in the private sector," Ms Berry noted.

Enrolling on a course or apprenticeship may be one way for IT employees to stand out if competition for paid work becomes tougher.

Recent research by VMware found the government is going to have to make about £3.6 billion of savings in the public sector IT market.
