SME support 'must be sustained in comprehensive spending review' Recent increased levels of support for firms such as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK's business sector must be built upon in order to further boost confidence levels in the market, an expert has said.

According to a spokesman for the Forum of Private Business (FPB), "confidence and certainty for the future" is essential in the country's fiscal environment, which is still in a state of recovery following "the most severe recession for a couple of generations".

The specialist's comments came after the publication of BDO's latest Business Trends report earlier this week (October 11th), which found that positive sentiment in the sector fell in September in comparison to one month previously and is now at its lowest level since May 2009.

However, he maintained that this situation could be reversed by the implementation of measures "that free up entrepreneurship" in the government's comprehensive spending review, which will be announced later this month.
