HMRC 'should give SMEs leeway on tax returns'Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the City of London and throughout the rest of the UK should be afforded a degree of leeway on their tax returns.

That is according to Stephen Alambritis, chief spokesman for the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), who has said that the government needs to be "reasonable and appropriate" with those SMEs that, for one reason or another, are unable to meet the October 31st deadline for self-assessment tax returns.

Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs recently stated that a fine of £100 will be issued to firms who do not comply with this rule, but Mr Alambritis has urged the authorities to accept those documents which land on November 1st.

"You may get entrepreneurs and self-employed people who quite legitimately send it off on Friday 29th or Saturday 30th and miss the deadline," he explained.

Meanwhile, the expert added that paper-based returns should not be completely superseded by online submissions on the basis of fairness and equality in the business sector.
