CMI: Government must continue to support UK businessesThe government must continue to support the country's businesses - such as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) - following the global economic downturn, an expert has said.

According to Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), it is imperative that companies and organisations in the UK are backed sufficiently by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance in the current economic climate if they are to recover.

"Although increasing financial aid is not possible at the moment, there are still things that our political leaders can and must do," she said.

Ms Spellman was speaking after the publication of the CMI's Economic Outlook report and a letter penned by 35 of the country's business leaders, which details the expected impact of the forthcoming comprehensive spending review.

The CMI - which has more than 86,000 members - official concluded that "immediate action" is needed in order to give managers more freedom and control over how they choose to spend "what little funding is available".
