Employers 'must engage more effectively with staff'Improved levels of communication between employers in businesses such as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could be crucial for managers to maintain a strong relationship with their staff.

That is according to a spokeswoman for Unison, who has said a strong and fruitful working environment may still be achievable within any given organisation even after the recession and today's (October 20th) comprehensive spending review, if bosses are open and honest with their employees.

"Employers need to engage with their workforce … before they introduce major changes," she said.

This approach, the Unison official continued, would put managers in a better position to handle "any problems they may have" more quickly and effectively.

Meanwhile, research published last week (October 15th) by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development indicated that more than a quarter - 27 per cent - of all workers in the private sector would be willing to protect their jobs by taking steps such as striking.
