Workers 'value development as highly as wages' Employees in roles such as finance jobs in the City of London value being given the opportunity to continually develop their skills as highly as their pay packets.

That is according to Mike Petrook, spokesman for the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), whose remarks indicate that financial gains are not necessarily seen as the most important aspect of working life by members of staff, despite the pressures of the recession.

Mr Petrook stated that while cash remains high on the priority list of any employee - "because frankly we've all got bills to pay" - the most important thing that many are searching for is to "make sure they are continually employable" through constantly adding to their repertoire of achievements and abilities.

This may be good news for organisations striving to retain their staff after the downturn, as it offers a cost-effective way of keeping employees' spirits up without having to spend much-needed funds.
