The government must go one step further to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK following the comprehensive spending review. That is according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), which has stated that the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance should implement a specialist initiative to aid the nation's SMEs in the aftermath of the global economic downturn. Entitled the Small Business Programme for Growth, the FSB has designed such a plan, which it believes would act as a stimulant for growth in this crucial sector and could therefore help revive the country's wider economy. Under the terms of the FSB's proposal, SMEs would be eligible for an extended period of the National Insurance holiday and a cut in VAT to five per cent for firms in the construction sector. This comes after Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute, said that the government needs to provide more financial assistance to the country's businesses.
