Spending review 'a mixed bag for SMEs' Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK were subjected to a mixed bag in terms of the announcements made in the comprehensive spending review last week (October 20th).

That is according to Emyr Williams, director of online resource Bytestart, who has said that chancellor George Osborne's speech gave details of both "threats" and "opportunities" to SMEs in terms of growth and investment following the global recession.

Mr Williams said that the "massive fiscal tightening" will inevitably mean that many SMEs will feel the effects in some way, with those operating in the public sector probably being affected most.

However, he added that there will also be chances for expansion, as "businesses that can help the public sector to save money and increase efficiencies will do well".

The expert was speaking after the publication of data by Eclipse Internet last week (October 22nd), which found that 41 per cent of Britain's SMEs believe they will struggle to grow in 2011.
