Auto-enrolment 'could be bad for SMEs' The government should have made one sector of the small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) market in the City of London and the rest of the UK exempt form its recent legislation on pension schemes, an expert has said.

Under new law implemented by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance, all companies will be required to implement either their own pension scheme or ensure their staff are put on the National Employment Savings Trust as of 2012.

However, Mike Cherry, policy chairman for the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), has criticised the administration for not recognising the burden in terms of both time and money automatic enrolment will have on the nation's micro-businesses.

These organisations - which have ten or less members of staff - should be allowed to be excluded from this policy as it shows that the government has not "listened to the needs of the UK's micro firms", Mr Cherry added.
