SMES 'may struggle to adapt to auto-enrolment' Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMES) offering positions such as accountancy jobs may find it tough to adapt to the government's new auto-enrolment pension schemes requirement.

That is the view of Robin Ellison, partner at law firm Pinsent Masons, who has said that the current economic climate may make it "difficult" for such businesses to take on this new system without it affecting them financially.

Earlier this week (October 27th), the Department for Work and Pensions announced that as of 2012, all employers will either have to introduce their own pension schemes for members of staff or instead list them on the National Employment Savings Trust system.

Under the terms of this measure, employers must contribute three per cent of an employees' pension from 2017, a figure which Mr Ellison says may be excessive for SMEs.

He added that those on "modest incomes" will also struggle to meet these compulsory payments.
