Jobseekers 'could opt to start their own business' More people currently searching for roles such as finance jobs in London may use the economic downturn as a reason for deciding to go it alone, an expert has said.

According to Peter Reilly, director of human resources research and consultancy at the Institute for Employment Studies (IES), a combination of the ongoing fiscal troubles in the UK and the public sector cuts announced in the comprehensive spending review last month could act as a catalyst for many seeking opportunities outside of traditional employers.

"What you might see, if we're lucky, is some people become rather more entrepreneurial," said the specialist.

However, Mr Reilly went on to urge people considering such a move to be aware that the current state of the country's finances means that any new start-up firms may find it difficult to get off the ground in the near future.

He was speaking following the publication of research by the Work Foundation, which stated that job creation in the private sector must be stronger if it is to successfully absorb the effects of the cuts in the public arena.
