SMEs to be offered more government contracts Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the west end of the City of London and throughout the rest of the UK could be set to benefit from a new government initiative.

Under plans unveiled earlier this week by Francis Maude - minister for the cabinet office and MP for Horsham - the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance will make it easier for such organisations to conduct transactions with the administration.

Speaking at the Department for Business and Innovation's Summit for Small Business, the minister announced a number of measures that will be adopted in order for the government to move further towards its plan for 25 per cent of its contracts to be awarded to SMEs.

For example, the level of red tape facing these firms will be reduced through a streamlining of the procurement process, the official pledged.

He added that SMEs and social enterprises have a crucial role to play in the "growth of the UK economy and often they will be the most flexible, the quickest to respond and the most imaginative".
