Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) offering roles such as accountancy jobs in the City of London must be granted a quarter of all government contracts if they are going to boost the country's wider economic recovery. That is according to Stephen Alambritis, spokesman for the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), who said that SMEs are ready to play their role as the fuel behind Britain's resurgence following the recession, but they require more help to do so. "It is small businesses that will get the economy back into recovery," the expert said. He added that there are five million such organisations currently in the UK, meaning that the poor unemployment statistics for the public sector would be helped massively if 25 per cent of them could employ one extra person. Mr Alambritis's comments came after small business minister Mark Prisk earlier this week pledged to award SMEs a quarter of all contracts being handed out by the coalition. Posted by James Strang
