Government pledges to help SMEsThe government has pledged to help the UK's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) grow and expand in the aftermath of the global economic downturn.

According to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills' new Business Plan for the years 2011-2015, the coalition is set to prioritise aiding such organisations as the nation as a whole seeks to get back on its feet following the recession.

Within the document, the department - which is headed up by Liberal Democrat MP Vince Cable - stated that it will "stimulate enterprise and trade to drive the rebalancing and private sector growth we want to see".

It added that "better business support" will be provided to help SMEs "start and thrive", while increased access to finance for these companies is also on the cards over the next four years

This comes after Stephen Alambritis of the Federation for Small Businesses said SMEs should be given 25 per cent of all governmental contracts.
