SMEs 'will suffer due to auto-enrolment' Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) offering office recruitment possibilities for roles such as finance jobs in London will be adversely affected by the government's new policies regarding pensions.

That is according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), which has said the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance's decision to make it compulsory for companies to automatically enrol their workers onto pension schemes from 2012 will be detrimental to the country's smaller firms.

The organisation stated that the initial cost of implementing these changes to such businesses will be in excess of £2,500, while the administrative price for them to fully alter their internal policies in line with the new requirements could be "extortionate".

Mike Cherry, policy chairman at the FSB, stated that the "true costs" of these reforms, despite the coalition introducing measures to make the process easier, are as yet unknown.

This comes after the government recently pledged to prioritise helping SMEs out of the recession in the coming years.
