Companies have been encouraged to adopt apprenticeship programmes as a means to create more positions, such as administration jobs in London.Craig Abrahart, operating director at notgoingtouni.co.uk, has said there should be more options for an alternative route for starting a career, other than going to university. He stated that this could be helped if a greater number of companies offer to take on work experience placements. His comments come after IBM launched its first apprenticeship scheme earlier this week. Skills minister John Hayes was at the launch of the programme, which will give school leavers with two A-levels two year's training in IT jobs, before being offered permanent employment by the firm. Mr Hayes represented the government's recent commitment to encourage firms to take on apprentices, with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills saying that an extra £250 million will be put into work experience programmes by 2014-15. This, it stated, will help create more than 75,000 extra positions such as administration jobs in London over the next four to five years. Posted by James Strang
