SMEs 'likely to struggle in the near future' Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across all sectors in the UK are likely to continue facing significant restrictions in the finances available to them in the near future.

That is the view of Phil McCabe, spokesman for the Forum for Private Business (FPB), who has said that there is a "struggle ahead" for the nation's smaller organisations as Britain continues its recovery following the global economic downturn.

Mr McCabe added that the extent of the issues in the sector "will depend upon emerging enterprise policies particularly related to finance and late payments" and feels the government should remove some of the burdens associated with SMEs in order to help them grow.

"The key issue is, historically firms do struggle more coming out of a recession than during it," he explained.

The expert was speaking following the publication of a report by British Gas Business, which found that lending to SMEs had fallen by 4.5 per cent in the last year.
