IT jobs sector 'remained resilient throughout recession' People searching for office-based jobs in the IT sector are likely to have enjoyed a more fruitful hunt for employment in the recent past than their counterparts seeking roles in other fields, an expert has suggested.

According to Gerry McLaughlin of ITContractor.com, the IT market remained resilient throughout the global economic downturn as more businesses began to recognise the fact that this section of their company can help, rather than hinder, any cost-cutting measures they wanted to implement during and after the recession.

"IT jobs salaries and contract rates barely went down during the downturn and are now back up above levels of two years ago," he explained.

Mr McLaughlin's opinions are in contrast to the results of a survey conducted by the IT Board last week (December 16th 2010), which found that 72 per cent of managers in the field believe it will not recover until 2012.

However, he added: "This was a downturn that IT sat out for the most part."
