SMEs 'need financial breathing space during cold snap' Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the UK should be given more assistance by the government and major financiers during the current cold snap, an expert has said.

According to John Walker, national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, the spell of adverse weather is costing the UK economy between £600 million and £1 billion every day, with the country's smaller firms bearing the brunt of these losses.

Therefore, Mr Walker has called on the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance to work together with the nation's banks and building societies, as well as local authorities, in order to give such organisations the "breathing space" they require at this tough time.

"Small businesses were banking on a good Christmas to make up for a bad year and the prospect of more bad news in 2011," he explained.

This comes after the organisation recently stated that SMEs are still being affected by the excessive red tape surrounding them in the UK.
