Gender boardroom quotas unlikely, says peerWomen working in finance jobs in London have been advised by former trade minister Lord Davies of Abersoch that his review into the make-up of Britain's corporate boardrooms is unlikely to recommend implementing gender quotas.

In an article for the Guardian's Comment is Free website, the one-time chief executive of banking giant Standard Chartered acknowledged the need to "redress the balance", but suggested imposing targets for firms could be counter-productive.

"Quotas have proved successful in some countries, but many of the women I have spoken with are against these," he explained. "I am not convinced that they are the right method to encourage progress."

Lord Davies added that female executives should be rewarded for their talent and ability rather than being promoted to high-flying roles on account of their gender and claimed there is a "multitude" of women well equipped for top jobs.

Earlier this month, broadcaster BSkyB was ordered by an employment tribunal to pay £200,000 to two women who claimed they had been unfairly dismissed to save on maternity pay.ADNFCR-3012-ID-800319705-ADNFCR
