SMEs 'could enjoy better 2011' Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) offering roles such as finance jobs in London could experience a more profitable year than in 2011, despite ongoing financial issues affecting the UK.

That is according to John Walker, national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), who was speaking during his new year message and stated that while "2011 does not look any easier" than 2010 - a year in which "confidence levels and business prospects plummeted even further" - there are some good reasons to be optimistic about the forthcoming 12 months.

Mr Walker noted that even though factors such as the increase in VAT to 20 per cent, rising fuel prices and public sector cuts will undoubtedly have an impact on the nation's SMEs, the new year "is still unchartered territory".

Therefore, the millions of smaller firms around the country can benefit from a fresh start, the official, who was elected in March 2010, concluded.
