Government looks to boost SMEs across UK The government is determined to boost the number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK in the aftermath of the global monetary slump, it has been revealed.

Under new plans unveiled by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance, the administration is set to strengthen its plans to up the numbers of such organisations - which may offer office-based roles such as accountancy jobs - by expanding the remit of its New Enterprise Allowance (NEA).

This initiative - which is aimed at aiding unemployed people to set up their own company - is now planned to help the creation of 40,000 new businesses across the UK by 2013.

It will be rolled out nationwide in the autumn of this year, after first being introduced in Merseyside later in January.

Prime minister David Cameron noted: "Backing new enterprises to start up and small businesses to grow will be what transforms our economy."

Meanwhile, research by the Federation of Small Businesses found recently that some 70 per cent of SMEs are concerned about the VAT rise.
