Government announces default retirement age schedule Older people in office-based roles such as finance jobs in the City of London might be pleased to hear that the government yesterday (January 13th 2011) confirmed that it is to abolish the default retirement age (DRA).

Currently, employers are able to force members of staff to retire at the age of 65 regardless of their personal circumstances, but this will change gradually as the legislation is phased out between April 6th 2011 and October 1st.

The Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance believes this will benefit individuals through giving them greater choice and flexibility about when they end their careers, as well as giving them the opportunity to live "longer, healthier lives".

Edward Davey, employment relations minister, commented: "Retirement should be a matter of choice rather than compulsion - people deserve the freedom to work for as long as they want and are able to do so."

Meanwhile, Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, added his support by saying that workers should be judged on their ability to do a job, not their age.
