SMEs 'struggling with taxation' Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) offering office-based roles such as finance jobs in London are struggling to cope with the complexities of the UK's taxation system.

That is according to Andrew Gotch, fellow at the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT), who has said that current legislation is driving many owners of such organisations to "desperation" as the complications that have evolved in the this area have become "almost insufferable" over the last ten years.

Mr Gotch was speaking after the publication of research by the Forum of Private Business last week (January 17th 2011), which found that 57 per cent of proprietors of these companies would be willing to pay more tax in return for a simplified system.

The CIOT official added that these findings are "not surprising" as they are a clear indication of the "level of desperation" being felt by such businesses in the aftermath of the worldwide economic slump.
