Expert: Firms must not cut emphasis on engaging staff Employers such as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) must make sure they continue to prioritise proper engagement with their workers following the global economic downturn.

That is the view of Jill Miller, research adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), who has said that not doing so could prove to be a major error by bosses as the country continues to recover in the wake of the recession, HR Magazine reports.

Ms Miller noted that cutting resources dedicated to enhancing engagement with employees in favour of spending cash elsewhere may cause long-term harm to companies of any size or stature.

She told the news source that making the fear of pay cuts and redundancies an alternative motivation towards greater productivity is not "great" and added that human resources departments may find such a strategy "fatal".

This comes after the CIPD reported recently that 56 per cent of workers across the UK are concerned about their lack of financial planning for the future.
