Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMES) offering office-based roles such as finance jobs in London and throughout the rest of the UK must be willing to embrace the trend of offering non-financial rewards to employees. That is the view of Dilys Robinson, principal research fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies (IES), who has said that such bonuses can be of real benefit to companies of all sizes which are struggling in terms of money following the global economic downturn. Ms Robinson explained that this will make it clear to workers that they are highly-valued, even though they may not be rewarded with increased salaries or cash benefits in the wake of the recession. She added that good communication is also a vital part of effective management in the current business landscape. This correlates with the opinion of Diana Bruce, policy advisor at the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals, who has said that non-cash benefits will be a "key area" in 2011.
