The government may have missed a good chance to reduce the amount of legislative red tape surrounding businesses such as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), an organisation has stated.According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC), the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance's decision to abolish the current Local Better Regulation Office (LBRO), which was announced last week (February 4th 2011), could prove costly to companies across the country. The coalition revealed that the LBRO will be superseded by a new and updated organisation, but the BRC has warned that this may risk "undermining improvements to local government enforcement". Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, commented that this represents a "step in the wrong direction" in terms of the government fulfilling its ambitions of reducing red tape. This comes after John Cridland of the Confederation of British Industry noted that smaller firms are "disproportionately affected" by certain aspects of the UK's employment law system.
