Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) offering roles such as accountancy jobs in the City of London and throughout the rest of the UK are still struggling to access sufficient levels of finance in the post-recession period. That is the view of Ed Moss, spokesman for the Manufacturing Institute, who has said that the age-old issue of being handed necessary funding "has not gone away" for such organisations. Mr Moss noted that the owners of SMEs have now come to take "glossy statements" with regard to lending from banks with a "pinch of salt" as many may have suffered from broken promises in recent times. Yesterday (February 23rd 2011), the European Commission announced the launch of the new Small Business Act across the whole of the European Union, which is aimed at improving SMEs' access to finance. However, Mr Moss added that "the banks are not yet lending" following the downturn. Posted by Mary King
