Agency Worker Directive 'could be costly to businesses' The government has been warned that the implementation of new employment laws such as the Agency Worker Directive (AWD) in 2011 could have a huge effect on the financial wellbeing of businesses in the City of London and throughout the UK.

Under plans made by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance, the country's employment laws will change in the aftermath of the recession between April of this year and April 2015.

For example, the AWD will be launched in October 2011 and has the primary aim of making sure that temporary employees are given equal treatment to their full-time counterparts through lifting some of the restrictions in place concerning the use of agency work by companies.

However, David Frost of the British Chambers of Commerce has stated that the introduction of such widespread changes will cost businesses in excess of £22 billion, due to the extra legislative burden the policies will add to their day-to-day operations.
