Official figures show growing number of older workers in employment An increasing number of professionals in roles such as accountancy jobs in the City of London are remaining in work past retirement age, new official figures have shown.

According to data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) today (March 2nd 2011), the last ten years have seen a significant rise in the number of employees opting to stay in their jobs instead of quitting work permanently at the age of 65.

For instance, in the final three-month period of 2010, there were 870,000 people in this age bracket still in employment of some description - either full-time or part-time - which represents a figure more than double the 412,000 recorded in 2001.

Jamie Jenkins, statistician at the ONS, commented that over the course of the previous decade, older workers have been "making up an increasing percentage of the total workforce in the UK".

This comes after recent research by Barclays Corporate and the Financial Times found that private businesses are most interested in employing people who already have experience of working in the sector.
