Bosses 'should be open to flexible working' Managers of companies offering business development jobs in the City of London should not be fearful of adopting flexible working practices, an expert has suggested.

According to Shirley Borrett, development director at the Telework Association, allowing employees to operate from home will not compromise the quality of their performance so long as a system is in place to properly measure productivity.

Ms Borrett noted there is still a common misconception among many bosses based on the fear that members of staff will not complete their duties if they are unsupervised, but said such professionals should ask themselves whether they can be sure their employees are working properly while in the office.

On the other hand, she added that managers who "measure people by what they expect them to do" in terms of weekly, monthly or quarterly timeframes are "not going to have a lot of problems managing people remotely".

Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics show that output per worker increased by 0.8 per cent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2010.
