Organisations with staff fulfilling roles such as business development jobs in the City of London and elsewhere in the UK may be negatively affected should proposals made by the European Commission (EC) be implemented into law, it has been suggested. The EC recently published a green paper in which it outlined plans to abolish some of the reduced VAT rates operative in Britain, while also stating its desire for a system to be put in place whereby certain areas of VAT regulation can be decided without the UK holding the power of veto. However, the Institute of Directors (IoD) has today (April 14th) released its response to the document in which it insists that British tax affairs should not be subject to majority voting. Richard Baron, head of taxation at the body, stated: "We hope that the government will resist many of these proposals.” This comes after John Walker of the Federation of Small Businesses noted that measures such as the Agency Workers Directive will impact on UK-based firms.
