Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) offering roles such as finance jobs in London represent the most important drivers of the innovation driving the UK's economy in the wake of the recession. That is the view of Dr James Bellini, a business futurologist, who noted that SMEs are a crucial aspect behind the country's post-downturn financial performance. "Often innovation is very much the driver of the future and innovation invariably comes from quite small enterprises," he explained. Dr Bellini went on to say that such firms then "either end up big" through their own growth, or "become merged into some larger entity" as a result of the way they embrace innovative policies. Earlier this week (April 13th), Baronness Wilcox, minister for intellectual property, launched a new exhibition in the north-east of England designed to inspire smaller firms and individuals to become more creative in the wake of the slump as there is a need for new ideas.
