New ministerial position 'could combat ageism' Older workers in office-based roles such as business development jobs in the City of London would benefit from the creation of a ministerial position to look out for their best interests, an expert has suggested.

According to Jane Ashcroft, chief executive of Anchor, the government should consider the possibility of having a minister with a specific focus on combating discrimination on the grounds of age, which remains relatively widespread in UK society.

Ms Ashworth noted that while the scrapping of the default retirement age (DRA) is definitely a step in the right direction, the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition still needs to take more action if this inequality is to be properly tackled.

"It's still quite acceptable for people to use language about older people that you wouldn't use in any other setting and to ridicule older people," she added.

Recent research by Anchor found that even though the DRA of 65 is being abolished this year, younger people consider individuals to be "old" when they reach the age of 62.
