Companies with members of staff fulfilling roles such as business development jobs must be willing to implement flexible working practices in the aftermath of the global economic downturn. That is the opinion of Paul Roberts, healthcare consultant at IHC, who believes that managers need to recognise the necessity of seeing the fact that their members of staff have lives outside the office. Mr Roberts refers to this as "managing the soft side of life" and called on bosses to draw a "firm but fair line" on aspects such as absence and the need for flexible working to offset any difficulties employees may have faced during the recession. His comments came after the publication of research by PwC recently, which showed that absenteeism costs UK business £32 billion a year, with workers taking almost double the number of sick days than their US counterparts. However, the expert went on to say that proper management can effectively limit any abuse of internal policies. Posted by Daniel Frost
