FSB calls on government to change Localism Bill for SMEs It is vital that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with staff fulfilling roles like business development jobs are fully valued in the government's Localism Bill before the legislation is implemented into law.

That is according to John Walker, national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), who believes the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance needs to make greater provisions for such firms in its plans.

The Localism Bill has been designed to move some of the power away from Westminster in order to provide regional authorities with greater autonomy, but Mr Walker feels that at present, SMEs are not being valued highly enough.

He noted: "The aims of the Localism Bill are clear, but there are many issues that need to be addressed while it is still being debated and before it is enshrined in law."

This comes after Phil McCabe of the Forum of Private Business stated that managers at SMEs are usually much closer to staff than their counterparts at larger companies.
