Government plans 'go against pledge to reduce red tape' Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) do not require formal rules to follow with regard to offering employee benefits such as flexible working.

That is the opinion of John Walker, national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), who has questioned the government's plans to impose new regulations on this area and parental leave.

The Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance unveiled proposals last week (May 12th) including measures on such matters as, in the words of chancellor George Osborne, the administration cannot "shy away from looking at difficult issues like employment law" if it is to stimulate post-recession growth.

However, Mr Walker believes this goes against previous commitments made by government officials to reduce the burden of red tape on smaller organisations as a way of helping them expand.

"Proposing changes to parental leave and flexible working at such a difficult time will not encourage small business owners to grow and take on more staff," he stated.
