The Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) are unlikely to be welcomed with open arms by the majority of professionals in roles such as finance jobs in London, an expert has suggested. As of October 1st 2011, companies will be legally obliged to grant all agency workers the same basic employment rights as permanent members of staff once they have been on their books for a period of 12 weeks under the planned changes from the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance. However, Gerry McLaughlin of online resource IT Contractor believes this may present an "IR25-sized headache" for contractors as it will increase the level of legislative red tape they are faced with. Mr McLaughlin criticised the administration for creating a "new, similar" problem for employers "without clearing up the last mess" left behind by the AWR's predecessor. He went on to note that "contractors could be inside on one contract position and outside on the next". Posted by Mary King
