Govt 'should recognise SMEs' vital role in recovery' Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with members of staff fulfilling roles such as finance jobs in London should be recognised as vital to the UK's financial recovery, an expert has said.

According to a spokeswoman from the Federation of Small Businesses, the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance must do more to help such firms, which represent "the backbone of the economy".

For instance, the official indicated that the administration should cut payroll costs for these organisations as part of measures to put them at the heart of its plans to boost the country's post-recession revival.

She explained that SMEs "make up 99 per cent of business in the UK" while also employing "more than half of the private sector workforce", meaning they should be treated better by the coalition.

This comes after the Recruitment and Employment Confederation revealed earlier this week (June 15th) that 64 per cent of companies are hoping to increase their workforce in the next quarter.
