An increasing number of older candidates are obtaining office jobs in London, new research has suggested.According to a study published by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) today (July 13th), there has been a significant rise in the number of people over the age of 50 finding permanent employment in Britain during the last 20 years. The group's Age and Gender: What has Changed in the Labour Market in Recent Years report established that in April 1992, 56.5 per cent of those between the ages of 50 and 64 were in work, while, by December 2010, this figure had risen to 64.9 per cent. Brendan Barber - general secretary of the TUC, a representative body with more than six million members - observed that this is proof that the government is "absolutely right" to get rid of the default retirement age. "Older people bring a wealth of skills and experience to the workplace," he added. Posted by Mary King
