Companies 'must evolve with social media' Companies with office staff in London need to make sure they keep right up-to-date with the latest developments in terms of using social media as a professional tool.

That is according to Tim Gibbon, director at consultancy Elemental, who has urged all managers to keep on top of this area of their business, as it has become crucial for all firms in the wake of the global economic downturn.

A growing number of organisations are now facilitating websites like Facebook and Twitter as key parts of their marketing and advertising strategies, primarily as they are seen as a much quicker and easier way of communicating and interacting with prospective customers than more traditional methods.

However, Mr Gibbon insisted that it is not enough to simply be registered on such portals as companies need to be fully committed to making the platforms work properly for their business if they are to be a success.

The expert noted that bosses need to approach the adoption of social media with "balance and realism", as otherwise they are risking the dilution of their own brand.

"Social media has evolved and this is important for businesses to appreciate - they will constantly need to do so as the landscape changes," he added.

Mr Gibbon went on to say that simply having a presence on the likes of Twitter sporadically and expecting this to yield positive business results is a naive way of thinking.

Indeed, the specialist stated that "quite the opposite can happen" if a company enters this arena unprepared and without the necessary level of understanding as to how it can work effectively for them.

Nevertheless, social media can be a useful tool as displayed by research from Regus published last week (July 4th), which showed that 41 per cent of all UK companies use it to attract new clients.
