Admin staff could benefit from flexible workingAdmin staff could get the chance to do their jobs from home as increasing numbers of companies are allowing members of staff to work away from the office.

Matt Oakley, chairman of the British Council for Offices research committee, predicted flexible working is going to become more popular in the coming years.

He explained it is not necessarily employers saying staff can do their jobs from home, but ensuring they are in the most appropriate location.

"What we think will happen [is] there will be more flexible and multi-locational workers who aren't tied to a desk five days a week, but they still [may] come into the office for face-to-face contact," said Mr Oakley.

Ian Osborne, project director at the UK's technology trade association Intellect, said incidents such as rail strikers and bad winter weather in the last year have led to a realisation that working from a central office might not be the best option.

He also noted cloud computing gives more people the chance to do their jobs at home or in cafes.
